The On-Ramp Program: What it is and why it works
On-ramp will give you confidence and the base to build further in our classes.
Most people who are thinking about joining a strength training gym have the same hesitation. Not about whether they want to do it. It’s that uncomfortable feeling of walking into a class full of people who already know what they're doing. Of being the odd person out who no one knows. It’s legitimately uncomfortable and and it's worth taking seriously.
Walking into a group class for the first time without knowing the movements, what they are called, where the equipment is or how the session flows is genuinely intimidating. We know that. It's why we built the On-Ramp program before putting anyone into a group class.
The On-Ramp isn't a formality. It's the difference between someone who walks into their first group class feeling prepared and someone who spends the whole session trying to figure out what's happening and wondering if everyone is watching them instead of actually training.
What the On-Ramp Actually Is
On-Ramp is Four 1 on 1 sessions with a coach. That's it. No group, no pressure to keep up with anyone, no performing in front of people who've been training for years. Just you and a coach working through the foundational movements and skills you'll use in every class at Thunder & Lightning.
Each session builds on the one before it. By the time you're done, you know how to move safely and effectively with a barbell, a kettlebells and dumbbells. You’ll have given your cardio that boost you said you needed before you join anything. You understand how our classes are structured, how to pace yourself, and what to expect when you walk in. You're not guessing anymore.
The On-Ramp costs $520 plus GST for the four sessions. That's four hours of 1 on 1 coaching focused entirely on getting you ready, at your pace, without any of the pressure of a group environment.
What Gets Covered
The four sessions cover everything you need to train safely and confidently in our group classes.
Movement patterns come first. The squat, the hinge, the press, the pull. These are the foundations of almost everything we do and getting them right from the beginning means everything built on top of them is solid. A coach watches every rep, gives feedback in real time, and adjusts your technique.
From there the sessions introduce the specific equipment used across our classes. This is your chance to get comfortable with barbells, kettlebells and dumbbells. You learn not just how to use them but why specific movements are programmed the way they are and what they're designed to do for your body.
Class flow and pacing are covered too. How sessions are structured, how to read a workout, how to scale movements to your current level, how to work at an intensity that's appropriate for you without burning out or holding back. These are the things that make the difference between someone who thrives in group classes and someone who struggles to find their footing.
Why It's 1 on 1
The On-Ramp is 1 on 1 specifically because learning new movements in a group setting before you're ready for a group setting defeats the purpose.
In a 1 on 1 session a coach can give you their complete attention. They see the things you can't feel. They can slow down when something needs more time and move faster when you're picking things up quickly. Everything is tailored to where you actually are, not where a group average assumes you to be.
By the time you transition into group classes, the movements aren't new anymore. The environment is the only unfamiliar thing, and that's a much smaller adjustment than trying to learn both simultaneously.
Onramp Program gives you everything you need to step into our group classes with confidence.
On-ramp will set you up for success in our programs and make the most of your training and progress.
What Happens After
When you complete the On-Ramp you're cleared to join any class on our schedule. Not conditionally. Not with reservations. Fully prepared to show up, follow the programming, and train alongside people who've been doing this for years without feeling like you're behind.
Some people with previous experience may qualify to skip the On-Ramp at coach's discretion. If you're not sure whether that applies to you, the No-Sweat Intro is where that conversation happens.
Who It's For
The On-Ramp is designed for anyone new to barbell training or new to our coaching style. You don't need any prior experience. You don't need to be fit before you start. You don't need to have ever set foot in a gym before.
What you need is a willingness to show up four times and let a coach teach you how to move well. Everything else gets built from there.
If the thing that's been standing between you and starting is not knowing what to expect when you walk in, the On-Ramp is specifically designed to solve that problem.
