So You Hit a Weight Loss Plateau. Here's Why - and What to Do About It
Metabolic adaptations can cause a temporary plateau in progress - but it’s a sign of efficiency, not a sign to give up.
You’ve been crushing your workouts, tracking your food, turning down treats and vices like a monk and then it stops.
The scale stops moving.
It’s like your body slammed the brakes for no reason. You didn’t change anything. You’re still doing everything right. So what happened?
Let’s bust the biggest myths about weight loss plateaus and get you moving forward again, physically and mentally.
“I’m not trying hard enough.”
Let’s start here…
You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. You’re not weak-willed.
What’s really happening? Metabolic Adaptation.
When you lose weight, your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) — the calories your body burns just to exist — goes down. A smaller body requires less fuel.
Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) also shrinks. Less mass to move means fewer calories burned during exercise and everyday life.
Basically: you’re more efficient now. Which is amazing!!! But… it also means your old calorie deficit might no longer be a deficit at all.
This isn’t failure. It’s physiology. And it happens to everyone.
“OK… I’ll just need to eat even less and train even more.”
Hold up. Lets take a look.
Slashing calories deeper and adding more workouts might nudge the scale… but it can also backfire hard.
Things happen to your body when you keep pushing a calorie deficit without a break:
Cortisol (stress hormone) climbs - this negatively effects weight loss
Sleep quality tanks - poor sleep will slow your recovery which will in turn effect your workouts
Mental frustration… You feel stuck and self sabotage starts to creep back in, you become more prone to overeating or binging
Combine all of these and your body clings to stored energy like it’s bracing for famine
This is how people burn out and never come back.
“I guess this is just what I look like forever”
Nope. That’s not the case.
A plateau is not a dead end - it’s a signal. Your body is simply asking for a new plan. And the fix isn’t to go nuclear, it’s to adjust with intention.
Here’s what to do to start on the road of long-term success:
Take a little break. Take a little pressure off yourself and don’t worry about running a deficit for a week. This will take some stress off your system.
Tighten up tracking. Take a closer look at the portions of some high calorie things or how often you are indulging in a drink or a snack. This is going to be the area that has the most potential to make a change.
Recalculate your calorie needs. Now that you’ve lost weight, your old calorie deficit might just be maintenance.
Shift your goals. Focus on getting stronger. Chasing a back squat PR or a pull-up milestone can rekindle motivation and sidestep scale obsession.
Double down on recovery. Sleep, hydration, and stress management are all part of the fat loss formula. Treat them like they matter - because they do.
The Mindset Side of the Plateau
Let’s not ignore the mental battle.
Plateaus mess with your head. They make you doubt your effort, your body, and your worth.
You start attaching your mood to a number. You scroll social media, see someone else’s six-pack, and feel like a failure.
Stop. That isn’t fair.
Zoom out. Look at your progress over time, not just the last week.
Celebrate the non-scale wins - better energy, improved confidence, stronger lifts, fewer cravings.
Detach success from the scale. The number is data. Not a moral judgment.
The goal isn’t to be skinny. The goal is to be strong, confident, healthy and in control.
A plateau is not a dead end - it’s a signal.
We’re here to support you.
Final Word: Don’t Panic. Adapt.
Plateaus are frustrating, sure. But they’re also a rite of passage.
They mean you’ve made progress. You’ve changed your body enough that it’s trying to keep up. That’s a win.
Now it’s time to change the strategy, not abandon the mission.
