A Real Powerlifting Program
in the Heart of Downtown

Thunder & Lightning Athletic Club is one of the only gyms in downtown Vancouver built around strength sports. Our powerlifting program is structured, coached, and built for all levels.

SQ

Squat

Coached technique from your first session. Build a strong, safe foundation and add plates to the bar every training cycle.

BP

Bench Press

Upper body strength built around competition bench technique-or just getting strong. Either way, we'll get you pressing more.

DL

Deadlift

The king of all lifts. Learn to pull heavy safely, fix your setup, and hit numbers you didn't think were possible.

Real Programming

Periodized programming that builds strength over time-not random workouts. Progress is planned, tracked, and coached every session.

What Makes Our Program Different

We built this program because we couldn't find a serious powerlifting community in downtown Vancouver. Here's what we do differently:

  • Every class is coached-not just supervised. You get technique feedback on every working set
  • Programming is periodized and progressive. You're building toward something, not just grinding through workouts
  • Classes are capped so the coach can actually watch you lift-not just wave at you from across the room
  • Beginners are welcome and expected. Our On-Ramp program gets you technically sound before you go heavy on your own
  • Competition prep is available if you want to take it to the platform-but competing is never required
  • We're at 427 Granville St at Hastings-steps from Waterfront Station, accessible from the Granville SkyTrain stop

Simple, Transparent Pricing

No contracts. No hidden fees. Just the coaching you need at a price that makes sense.

Common Questions

Do I need experience to join?

No experience needed. Our beginner intro program teaches you squat, bench, and deadlift technique from the ground up before you start loading heavy. If you've never touched a barbell, that's completely fine-we coach a lot of first-timers and it's one of our favourite things to do.

Do I have to compete?

Not at all. Most of our members train purely for strength and personal goals without ever stepping on a platform. If you do want to compete, we have coaches experienced in meet prep who can walk you through the process-but it's completely optional.

What's the difference between group classes and 1-on-1 coaching?

Group classes follow a coached group program-you train alongside others, get technique feedback every session, and follow periodized programming as a group. 1-on-1 coaching is fully individualized: your own program, your own schedule, and one coach entirely focused on you.

What does the On-Ramp program involve?

On-Ramp gets you technically competent and confident on all three lifts as well as accessories before joining regular classes. You'll learn setup, bracing, cues, and movement patterns so when you're in a group setting, you can focus on loading and progress rather than trying to figure out where the bar goes.

I have a history of back or knee issues. Can I still train?

Many of our members train with old injuries. Powerlifting, done with good technique and appropriate loading, often strengthens exactly the areas people have historically hurt. We'll assess your movement in the intro session and program accordingly. If you have an active injury that needs rehab, we'll refer you to the right resource first.

Where are you located and how do I get there?

We're at 427 Granville St at Hastings in downtown Vancouver, steps from Waterfront Station. Street parking is available on surrounding blocks as well as parkades.
